The Vaughan Awards

The Joseph D. Vaughan Award was initiated in 1962 to memorialize the Honorable  Joseph D. Vaughan, a New Hampshire legislator.  Representative Vaughan was an early advocate for older residents of the State and was instrumental in creating a State Agency dedicated to the well being of older people.

The Joseph D. Vaughan Award is presented each year to individuals or couples, over the  age of 60, who have shown outstanding leadership or demonstrated meritorious achievement as a volunteer, on behalf of older citizens in New Hampshire. One award, for a person or couple, is made for each of New Hampshire’s ten counties.

Each year EngAGING NH and The State Committee on Aging seek nominations, make selections, and arrange for an award Ceremony with the Governor and the Commissioner of Health and Human Services. The ceremony is held in May, Older American's Month.

Anyone can nominate worthy individuals for consideration. We encourage you to download the nomination form and recommend a candidate who makes a difference in your community. Profiles of the awardees appear in our monthly newsletter.

Nominate someone for the Vaughan Awards

:In September 2019 the members of the State Committee on Aging transitioned to the newly formed NH Commission on Aging.  Over the past few years EngAGING NH has supported the State Committee by managing the process leading to the presentation of the Joseph D. Vaughan awards that recognized older adult volunteers.  EngAGING NH will continue to assist the Commission in recognizing volunteers this year.

The 2020 recognition of this volunteerism continues but with some changes; please note that the nomination form has been revised to reflect this transition.  The Commission will have a broad approach to the issues affecting NH’s aging population, and authority that expands on the former Committee charge. Look to the EngAGING NH Newsletter for information and updates as the Commission settles in.
